I'm John Carter, a digital communications, web, and visual design professional based in Fairfax, Virginia.
My experience spans web content, WordPress, SharePoint, responsive HTML/CSS, e-learning, information graphics, presentations, photography, and visual communications. I'm most useful in roles where design, content, and implementation overlap.
Experience
A background built across design, communications, and the web.
At Cadmus Group, I designed and developed digital products and communications supporting organizations including EPA, FEMA, USAID, ENERGY STAR, Con Edison, NYSERDA, and PSEG. My work included SharePoint site design, responsive web content, WordPress, interactive e-learning, presentations, infographics, and brand-aligned digital materials.
Before Cadmus, I worked with Sharp & Company on communications supporting Montgomery County government departments. That work included web publishing, content development, accessibility, photography, information accuracy, and timely updates to public-facing information.
Alongside my agency and corporate work, I have maintained an independent design and photography practice serving nonprofits, businesses, associations, and advocacy organizations.
How I Work
Visual judgment with practical implementation.
I'm comfortable moving between visual design and implementation. I can think about hierarchy and communication while working through a WordPress page, a SharePoint layout, an HTML/CSS implementation, a presentation, or an interactive learning experience.
I also use current AI tools where they make the work more efficient, particularly for research, prototyping, content organization, and workflow development. I see AI as one tool within a broader digital practice, not as a replacement for judgment, communication, or craft.
